Should you fertilize before or after rain?
For granular fertilizer, just before a light rain is ideal. About ¼ inch of water moves the nutrients off the grass blades and into the soil. What you want to avoid is a heavy rain of an inch or more soon after applying. It can wash fertilizer off the lawn and into gutters, storm drains, and streams. Some states and cities restrict applying fertilizer before heavy rain or on frozen ground.
This forecast marks a day No if an inch or more of rain is forecast within 24 hours, and tells you when light rain will water it in for you.
Exception: weed & feed
Granular weed-and-feed products work differently. The weed killer has to stick to damp weed leaves, so they are usually applied to wet grass (early morning dew) with no rain or watering for 24 hours afterward. If that's what you're using, check the weed killer forecast for rain-free timing, and follow the bag.
Temperature and timing by grass type
- Cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass): the most important feedings are in early fall, with a lighter one in spring. Avoid fertilizing during summer heat waves above about 85°F.
- Warm-season grasses (Bermuda, St. Augustine, zoysia, centipede): fertilize from late spring through summer while the grass is actively growing. Wait until the lawn has fully greened up.
- Don't fertilize frozen or dormant lawns. The nutrients can't be used and are more likely to wash away.
No rain coming? Water it in
If the forecast is dry, apply the fertilizer and run your sprinklers for about ¼ inch of water, roughly 15–30 minutes for most sprinklers. Put a rain gauge or a tuna can on the lawn to measure. Sweep any granules off driveways and sidewalks back onto the grass.

Can I put fertilizer down on wet grass?
Regular granular fertilizer can be applied to wet grass but may stick to blades, so water it in afterward. Weed-and-feed products are actually meant for damp grass so the herbicide sticks to weed leaves.
