The best weather for spray painting
Most aerosol spray paints list 50–90°F as the application range, with humidity below 85%. For the best finish, aim for 60–80°F, humidity under about 65%, and almost no wind. Work in the shade. Metal or plastic in direct sun can get hot enough to cause bubbling and a rough, dry spray.
Humidity: why spray paint turns cloudy
As solvents evaporate quickly from spray paint, they cool the surface. In humid air, that can pull moisture out of the air into the wet film, causing a milky, hazy blush, especially with clear coats and glossy colors. If the surface is near the dew point, water condenses right on it. Low humidity and a surface well above the dew point avoid both.
Cold, wind, and recoat timing
- Cold: below 50°F, paint atomizes poorly, sags, and dries slowly. Warming cans in warm (not hot) tap water helps. Never heat cans over flame or above about 120°F.
- Wind: even a light breeze blows overspray onto cars and siding and drops dust and bugs into wet paint. A pop-up spray tent helps.
- Recoating: many enamels must be recoated within about an hour or after 24–48 hours. Recoating in between can wrinkle the finish. Check the can.

What humidity is too high to spray paint?
Most spray paints say to apply below 85% humidity, and results are best below about 65%. High humidity causes slow drying and a cloudy, blushed finish.
What temperature is too cold to spray paint?
Below 50°F is too cold for most aerosol paints. The paint sprays unevenly, runs, and takes much longer to dry. Some specialty low-temperature spray paints exist.
How windy is too windy to spray paint?
Anything above about 10 mph makes it hard to get an even coat and sends overspray everywhere. Under 5–7 mph is best, or use a spray tent or a garage with the door open.
Why is my spray paint wrinkling?
Wrinkling usually happens when a second coat is applied after the first coat has partly dried but not cured. Recoat within the window on the can (often within an hour) or wait the full recoat time (often 24–48 hours).
